Words from the Curator

Day 5 (Sun 22/05/2016)

Finally it comes, the last day of the course on which Keynote Presentation is given by the seminal Chinese curator Li Zhenhua who is based in Zurich and Beijing but also travels a lot. He is very hands-on and has created a lot of internationally renowned projects. He mentioned a few and encouraged curators to be experimental and open-minded for cross-disciplinary collaborations.

The same motto is embraced by Hong Kong-based French artist Maurice Benayoun. He is a pioneer of media arts. We then visited Osage Gallery where his Exhibition JUST DIG/IT! is opening. The exhibition shows the first time as large-scale installations, Inside the Tunnel under the Atlantic (1995, video, 22”30’) and Inside the Paris-New Delhi Tunnel (1997, video, 13”00’), produced at the Pompidou Center during the exhibition of Tunnel under the Atlantic(1995).

Leaving Osage in Kwun Tong, we walked towards the pier and found Yeung Yang already waiting for us there. She is the Founder of soundpocket, promoting the practice of sound art and supporting sounds artists in HK. She led a sound tour for us from Kwun Tong Pier to North Point Pier and inspired us by the art form that fewer people pay attention to.

From North point pier, we took the ferry back to Kowloon city to Videotage as the ending point of our course. Iven Cheung, Guest Curator of Videotage and Dr. Isaac Leung, Chairperson of Videotage gave all of us a warm welcome and talked about the programming at Videotage.

In the last hour, we de-briefed on the whole five days of enriching, experiencing and exchanging ideas. It was proved fruitful for both the participants and the speakers. I believe it should be continued annually to strengthen the bond and facilitate the knowledge transfer.
